City of Charlottetown

As the Birthplace of Confederation and the capital of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown has earned national and provincial historic prominence and was awarded the Prince of Wales Leadership Award for demonstrating its firm commitment to the merits and value of heritage preservation.

A visit to Charlottetown is a bit like stepping back into the past.  Charlottetown holds a prestigious place in Canadian history as the Birthplace of Confederation. In 1864 delegates from across the country arrived on our shores and began discussions of the idea of a merger of colonies. This historic event will be celebrated with its 150th anniversary in 2014. Charlottetown will be buzzing with activity and alive with the spirit of our nation throughout the year!

Charlottetown is increasingly being hailed internationally as a foodie haven, a cultural capital and a favorite coastal hangout.

Our unique city was named the capital of Prince Edward Island in April 1855. It was the chosen site as it is centrally located on a beautiful harbor front.
